My Mother's 'Homelessness' Got Me in Trouble(母親的“無家可歸”讓我陷入困境)

1. From an early age, reading, and writing were fundamental instruments in my life. My mother loved to read. When I was young my mother was a substitute teacher for a while so learning was always a big part of our household. Before I started kindergarten I could read and write full sentences. Not only did my mother teach me how to read and write at and very young age, but she also made sure that our home was stocked with books of various kinds and for various ages. We would regularly visit the library where I would be able to check out one movie and two books of my choosing. She regularly read to me and made sure that I was getting an understanding of what was being read to me, this being the basis of my learning to read and write before attending elementary school. When I was in the third grade we moved to Lansing, Michigan where my mother furthered her educational career by attending Thomas M. Cooley Law School where she eventually was able to graduate and receive her doctorate degree in the field of law.

2. Education has always been a part of my life and continues to maintain its solidification within my life prevalently to this day. However, these last couple of semesters my love, advocacy, and motivation for education have tremendously declined. Unfortunately, I feel that these are the basic requirements and standards of being a college student. Genuinely applying yourself, maintaining discipline, and working as hard as you can to attain the goal of graduation is what really sets students apart, determining a graduate from a dropout.

This last year and a half has really taken a toll on me I was homeless the last two semesters with documentation, and my mother is currently homeless going back and forth from sleeping in her car in Dallas and staying some days in my dorm, I have an outstanding balance of $2,000 on my student account that I am currently working to get paid off so that I can get registered for summer classes and fall, I am out of financial aid so I don't?know how I will pay my tuition for my fall classes in order to graduate because of my 6-year college career, and I don't know where I will stay if I don't get registered for summer classes because I will become homeless again.

4. After emailing you, Professor Sun, I really had to sit back and make a reflection on why and how I’ve continued to stay in this position. After careful reflection, I’ve come to the conclusion that, yes although my cards are stacked against me, I have been wallowing in my pity. I had completely shut down and shut out my classwork making the excuse that my life was falling apart. However this isn’t the case, it was just a cop-out. No matter what we struggle to go through, no matter how bad the world may get, and no matter how hard something may seem at that time, the world will continue to move forward. You can either move forward with it or you can get lost behind trying to play catch up for something you’ve had complete control over. I may not have control over my account balance, my mother being homeless or paying for my schooling for an additional 6 months but I do have control over how I continue to move forward and how I handle and carry myself.

If you are still willing to accept my essay and allow me to make up my quizzes I sincerely appreciate you to the bottom of my heart. As you said in our email thread, “It is not just a "title"; there are some basic requirements. You should know that when you enter college. The graduation indicates you got educated. Otherwise, you're just kidding yourself.” I am not acting and carrying myself as an educated college student but from here on out, I will exude nothing less. In the end, I thank you for your candor and willingness to listen and I will strive to show you better.
