Test Eight

Passage One

Questions 1 to 5are based on the following passage.

Ifwomen are mercilessly (無(wú)情地) exploited year after year, they have onlythemselves to blame. Because they tremble at the thought of being seen inpublic in clothes that are out of fashion they are always taken advantage of bythe designers and the big stores. Clothes which have been worn only a few timeshave to be put aside because of the change of fashion. When you come to thinkof it, only a women is capable of standing in front of a wardrobe(衣柜)packed full ofclothes and announcing sadly that she has nothing to wear.

Changing fashions are nothing more than the intentional creation ofwaste. Many women spend vast sums of money each year to replace clothes thathave hardly been worn. Women who cannot afford to throw away clothing in thisway, waste hours of their time altering the dresses they have. Skirts arelengthened or shortened: neck-lines are lowered or raised, and so on.

No onecan claim that the fashion industry contributes anything really important tosociety. Fashion designers are rarely concerned with vital things like warmth, comfort and durability 耐用) They are only interested in outward appearanceand they take advantage of the fact that women will put up with any amount ofdiscomfort, as long as they look right. There can hardly be a man who hasn’t atsome time in his life smiled at the sight of a woman shaking in a thin dress ona winter day, or delicately picking her way through deep snow in high heeledshoes.

Whencomparing man and women in the matter of fashion, the conclusions to be drawn are obvious. DO the constantlychanging fashions of women’s clothes, one wonder, reflect basic qualities ofinconstancy and instability? Men are too clever to let themselves be cheated byfashion designers. Do their unchanging styles of dress reflect basic qualitiesof stability and reliability? That is for you to decide.

Although oursociety has changed greatly over the past century, the etiquette of thank you notes has not.

While mostpeople would agree that thank-you notes under these conditions are a necessity, there are still those who forever delay or are forgetful for unknown reasons.

And at no timeof the year are thank-you notes more visible (or lacking) than June, the monthof graduations, and the beginning of summer parties.
