“Many cities have built ‘wow’ infrastructure, such as the Cykelslangen [“Cycle-Snake”] bridge in Copenhagen, or the Hovenring in Eindhoven," explained cycle-infrastructure consultant Meredith Glaser, adding that these kinds of “iconic pieces of cycle infrastructure make people go on detours to get to them, and make them feel loved and cared for.”

Those two bicycling bridges have been joined by more recent examples of jaw-dropping cycling infrastructure, and the best-of-the-best are featured in the second edition of the Bicycle Architecture Biennale, a collection of fifteen visually striking cycle-related design projects, some of which have already been built. The Biennale is curated by BYCS, a Dutch social enterprise which promotes transport cycling. The goal of BYCS is to get half of all city trips to be made by bicycle by 2030.

By improving mental and physical health, addressing air pollution and climate change and by bringing communities together in dynamic ways, cycling is a powerful force for transformation. Every city or neighborhood has the potential to become a success story through cycling. With this Biennale, we want to offer the inspiration to make that happen.”

We proudly present some amazing achievements in the field of bicycle architecture; the designs convey the balance between moving fast and healthily but also slowing down to create thriving, livable places. The selected projects not only come from places with mature cycling cultures but also from places that lack that ideal context but are still showing what is possible.”
