The Superdome opened on August 9, 1975, in New Orleans, Louisiana路易斯安那州. It took four years to build it. It is the world‘s largest steel-constructed room without posts inside holding it up. It is 273 feet high. The dome is 680 feet across. There are more than 19,000 light fixtures燈具. Over 400 miles of electrical wiring was used. It has 14 elevators and 42 escalators自動(dòng)扶梯. There are parking spaces for 5,000 cars and 250 buses. There are ballrooms舞廳 for special parties and meeting rooms for conventions大會(huì).
The Superdome is home to the New Orleans Saints football team. Five Super Bowls美國橄欖球超級碗大賽 have been played there. Basketball games are held in the Superdome.
The superdome is not just a sports arena比賽場. In 1981, 87,500 people attended a Rolling Stones concert. That is a world record for an indoor concert. The Republican共和黨的 National Convention was held there in 1988. Pope John Paul II spoke to 80,000 children in the Superdome in 1987. The first full-sized carnival嘉年華 inside the domed stadium was held in 1986. It is now an annual event.
People also go to the Superdome to see rodeos牛仔競技表演,circuses, and ice shows. Sportsmen go to boat and fishing shows. There are home and garden shows, auto shows, and music festivals.
In 2005, Hurricane颶風(fēng) Katrina hit New Orleans. The Superdome was used as a shelter避難所 for 30,000 people. The Superdome had to be repaired after the hurricane. It took 13 months and $193 million to repair. The Superdome reopened on September 25, 2006. A huge celebration was held in honor of its reopening.
