Lanterns for the New Year
My name is Lisa. Last week, my friend Ling invited me over. She was celebrating Chinese New Year. Chinese New Year is also called the Spring Festival. It is the oldest holiday in China.
Ling’s mom asked us to make decorations. “Let’s make lanterns for the Lantern Festival,” Ling said. A lantern is a lamp that people carry on the streets.
Ling and I had fun making lanterns. First, we folded a piece of construction paper in half the long way. Then, we cut lines along the folded part of the paper. We did not cut the lines all the way through. Next, we unfolded the paper and glued the edges together. Then, we cut a strip of paper for the handle. We glued it in two places on top of the lantern. We added glitter to make the lanterns shiny!
We made lots of lanterns in different colors. Ling suggested that we hang them up with yarn. We hung the lanterns up in the kitchen. They looked great. I went home and made some lanterns for my room!
