For as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted a personalmotto. I wanted a saying that I could really try to live my lifeby. I mean all the humorous book and storybook heroes always have apersonal principle they follow. Good manners! Courage! Keenness! But a part of me could never get myself to create my own mottobecause I never knew where to start and I never thought I couldgive one.

“With great power comes great responsibility.” is a quote by thegreat writer and philosopher, Voltaire. More familiar, it makes anappearance in the modern day movie performance of the superheroSpider-Man. This saying provides a sense of responsibility forthose with actually limitless power.

“Be good to others and others will be good to you.” is anotherwell-known proverb that has roots in almost all of the majorreligions. Although it is less practiced today than it is lectured,it is a powerful and good motto to live by. Kindness, in thissense, is the final power in judging every action.

My personal motto today has an idea – being efficient. Throughmy limited knowledge, I have come to find that this is simply thebest way for me to give insight about who I am and what I believein.

Efficiency is a quality that everyone desires for, right? Whodoesn’t want to be able to not only work fast but to achieve greatresults? To some, it may appear to be a frightening journey. But tome, it means that I have a lifelong journey to improve the methodsand ideas with which I come near my tasks.

Regardless of what motto you want to live by, I believe thateveryone should have one, or two or more. These are all symbols ofa perfect story of us, in our own view. And it immediately providesinsight to the type of person we were, we are and what we strive tobe. We are never meant to be perfect, but it is important to tryand live by a belief that will help us reach our potential. All youhave to do is know what your excitement is and live by it.

21. Why does the writer want a personal motto?

A. He can follow a belief to live his life.

B. He can behave like the heroes in storybooks.

C. He can have the courage to be enthusiastic.

D. He can know where to create his own motto.

22. In the eyes of the writer, Spider-Man mainly lives by_______.

A. power B. kindness C. religion D. responsibility

23. What can we infer from the writer’s personal motto?

A. He desires for great results of his tasks.

B. He will spend a lifelong time on traveling.

C. He expects to work well without wasting time.

D. He will never find a journey discouraging.

24. The last paragraph implies that a motto _________.

A. helps you know your potential B. can tell us who we reallyare

C. reflects what your passion is D. will prove you to beperfect

Recently some articles claims the word ‘‘selfie” as one of themost annoying words. But I’d like to offer that maybe it is not sobad.

The “selfie” is used to describe the self-taken photo, oftenfrom a smart phone. Women and men decorate their Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts with these pictures, sometimes with puckered(翹起) lips or large smiles. In fact, the selfie has become so widelyknown that over 31 million photos on Instagram are taken with theselfie.

Let’s think about it. Someone takes about 10 selfies each timethey do, and they only end up posting one or two of those. Theypick the one that they feel makes them look the best. Isn’t thatbeautiful? In that one picture, someone has given himself orherself confidence. Self-image is important. In society today, weare often so consumed with the feeling that what society tells usis perfect. But maybe, with that one selfie, we feel that we fitthat bill. We feel handsome, beautiful, confident, smart, happy andcontent. For that moment, everything bad or terrible that has everhappened to us is erased (消除), because that smile or that pucker iswhat gives us the determination to love ourselves.
I saw a spoken word poem recently and the young man said: If I askyou what you love, the answers will most likely roll off yourtongue. You love to read. You love to write. You love birds, music, your mom, your brother, your sister, your daughter, your bestfriend, your dog. How long do you think you can go on and on beforeyou say “I love myself”.
That statement hit me like a ton of bricks. I’ve struggled withconfidence all of my life. I still do. And in no way am I sayingthat taking a selfie is a gateway to that confidence. However, theselfie does deserve some credit for allowing individuals to expressthemselves. Pamela Rutledge agrees, stating, “There are many morephotographs available now of real people than models.”
32. According to the author, selfie ______.
A. is an annoying habit for people B. becomes a fashion amongteenagers
C. makes a person become self-centered D. gives a person a sense ofconfidence
33. According to the writer, we live in a society where ______.

A. being perfect is highly valued B. people judge others bytheir appearance

C. confidence is based on one’s self-images D. beauty almostdecides everything

34.The author mentions a poem in the passage to stress______.
A. the power of true love B. the need to love ourselves
C. the kinds of love we have D. the endless love we get
35. The best title for the passage is ______.
A. The Meaning of Selfie B. A Fashion of Selfie
C. A Praise of Selfie D. The Criticism of Selfie
