flood

1. aflood of 大量的。如:

What a flood of rain!好大的雨啊!

A flood of letters came.收到了大量的信件。

2. inflood(洪水)泛濫。如:

The river is in flood.河水泛濫。

 

follow

1. asfollows如下。如:

The rules are as follows.規(guī)則如下。

His explanation is as follows.他的解釋如下。

2. befollowed by 跟在……之后。如:

In English the letter Q is alwaysfollowed by a U. 英語中的字母 Q 后總要跟一個字母 U。

The lightning was quickly followed byheavy thunder. 閃電過后緊接著是響雷。

3. follow ones example 仿效某人的做法。如:

He followed his sister’s example andwent to college. 他效仿他的姐姐也進(jìn)了大學(xué)。

I don’t want you to follow my exampleand rush into marriage. 我希望你不要效法我,也倉促結(jié)婚。

1. befond of sb (sth) 喜歡某人(某事物)。如:

1. befool enough to do sth (某人)做某事真是很蠢。如:

He was fool enough to believeher. 他真笨,竟然去相信她的話。

2. makea fool of sb 欺騙或愚弄某人。如:

Don’t make a fool of the oldlady. 不要捉弄這位老太婆。

We were all made fools of by thedoor-to-door salesman. 我們?nèi)o上門的推銷員哄騙了。

3. makea fool of oneself 出洋相,出丑。如:

Sorry I made such a fool ofmyselflast night. I musthave been drunk. 對不起,我昨晚真是出丑了,我一定是喝醉了。

 

foolish

1. Its foolish of sb to do sth 某人做某事是愚蠢的。如:

It’s foolish of you to believeher. 你相信她真是太蠢了。

It was foolish of her to say such athing. 她說出那樣的話來,真是太蠢了。

注:該句型也可轉(zhuǎn)換為:

She was foolish to say such a thing.

You are foolish to believe her.

1. atthe foot of

(1) ……的腳下。如:

At the foot of the mountain there wasan inn. 山腳下有家客棧。

(2) ……的尾端。如:

Spare blankets lay at the foot ofeach bed. 每張床的床尾都放有備用毛毯。

2. onfoot步行。如:

We went to the station onfoot. 我們步行去車站。

Do you go to school on foot or bybike? 你上學(xué)是步行還是騎自行車?

3. toones feet ……起來。如:

Hearing the news he rose (jumped) tohis feet. 聽到這消息,他站()了起來。

He came over and brought the old manto his feet. 他走過來把老人扶了起來。

 

forbid

1. forbid sb sth 禁止或不準(zhǔn)某人使用某物或進(jìn)入某處。如:

His wife forbids him wine.他老婆不準(zhǔn)他喝酒。

We forbid him the house.我們不準(zhǔn)他進(jìn)屋。

2. forbid doing sth 禁止或不準(zhǔn)做某事。如:

We forbid smoking in theoffice. 本辦公室內(nèi)不準(zhǔn)吸煙。

I forbid him [his] going thereagain. 我不準(zhǔn)他再去那兒。

注:forbid 一般不直接跟不定式作賓語。

3. forbid sb to do sth 禁止或不準(zhǔn)某人做某事。如:

I forbid him to go thereagain. 我不準(zhǔn)他再去那兒。

The teacher forbids the students toread such books. 老師不準(zhǔn)學(xué)生看那樣的書。

注:通常不說 forbid sb from doing sth, 盡管現(xiàn)代英語已有此用法,但很多詞書反對這一用法,中學(xué)生宜慎用。

 

force

1. force sb to do [into doing] sth 迫使某人做某事。如:

They forced her to sign [intosigning] the paper. 他們強(qiáng)迫她在文件上簽字。

He was forced to leave (into leaving)the country. 他被迫離開這個國家。

2. byforce靠武力,強(qiáng)行。如:

The soldiers took the prisoners awayby force. 士兵把犯人強(qiáng)行帶走了。

The thief took the money from the oldman by force. 小偷強(qiáng)行從這位老人身上搶走了錢。

3. byforce of sth靠某物,憑借某物。如:

The crowd broke open the locked gateby force of numbers. 這群人憑借人多把上鎖的大門沖開了。

The hardest things become easy byforce of habit. 成了習(xí)慣之后,再難的事也變得容易。

 

forget

1. forget to do sth 忘記去做某事。如:

I forgot to post the letter.我忘記寄信了。

Don’t forget to tell him thenews. 別忘告訴他這消息。

2. forget doing sth 忘記曾做過某事。如:

I forgot telling her the news.我忘了曾告訴過她這個消息。

I shall never forget hearing hersinging that song. 我永遠(yuǎn)不會忘記她唱那首歌的情景。

3. forget about sth (sb)

(1) 忘記()某事。如:

He forgot about the meeting.他忘了去開會。

They were so busy that they evenforgot about their ownmeals. 他們忙得連飯都忘記吃。

(2) 不把某事(某人)放在心上。如:

Try to forget about him.別再想他了。

Let’s forget about ourdifferences. 咱們不要把彼此的分歧放在心上。

 

forgive

1. forgive sb原諒某人。如:

She forgave her husband.她原諒了她丈夫。

2. forgive sth 原諒某事。如:

Please forgive my fault.請原諒我的過錯。

3. forgive doing sth 原諒某了某事。如:

Please forgive myinterrupting. 請原諒我打擾了。

He forgave her doing that.他原諒他那樣做了。

4. forgive sb for sth 原諒某人某事。如:

I’ll never forgive you for what yousaid to me lastnight. 我永遠(yuǎn)不會原諒你昨晚對我說的話。

注:有時可省略其中的介詞 for。如:

Please forgive me (for) myfault. 請原諒我的過錯。

5. forgive sb for doing sth 原諒某人做某事。如:

Forgive me for interruptingyou. 原諒我打擾你。

Please forgive me for cominglate. 請原諒我來遲了。

比較:

They forgave his being rude.他們原諒了他的魯莽。

They forgave (him) hisrudeness. 他們原諒了他的魯莽。

They forgave him for beingrude. 他們原諒了他的魯莽。

 

fortunate

1. befortunate in sb (sth) 有某人或某事物是幸運的。如:

You’re fortunate in yourchoice. 你作出這樣的選擇是幸運的。

You’re fortunate in yourteacher. 你很幸運有位好老師。

2. befortunate (enough) to do sth 很幸運做某事。如:

We were fortunate to get there intime. 我們能及時趕到那兒真是幸運。

He’s fortunate (enough) to have goodhealth. 他很幸運有健康的身體。

You’re fortunate (enough) to escapebeing injured. 你沒有受傷真是幸運。

3. befortunate in doing sth 做某事是幸運的。如:

He is fortunate in living to such anadvanced age. 他能活到這樣的高齡真是幸運。

You’re fortunate in being able tolive in the country. 你能住在鄉(xiāng)間真是幸運。

注:有時介詞 in 可以省略。另外,該結(jié)構(gòu)??膳c be fortunate to do sth 互換。如:

He is fortunate to have [in having] agood job. 他很幸運有份好工作。

4. Its fortunate (for sb) that-clause (某人)……是幸運的。如:

It is fortunate (for him) that he hasa good wife. 他很幸運有位好妻子。

It was very fortunate for him that Iarrived on time. 我按時趕到了,算他走運。

 

fortune

1. havethe (good) fortune to do sth 做某事很幸運。如:

I had the fortune to meet himthere. 我在那兒見到了他,真是幸運。

I had the good fortune to be invitedto the party. 我很幸運被邀請參加了晚會。

He had the good fortune to be freefrom illness all his life. 他命好,一輩子沒生病。

2. makea [ones] fortune 發(fā)財。如:

He made his fortune by sellingoil. 他靠賣石油發(fā)了財。

He made a fortune out ofsmuggling. 他靠走私發(fā)了財。

 

free

1. befree of [from] sth 擺脫某事物,沒有某事物。如:

I’m free from work (duty)today. 我今天不上班(值班)

Most of the roads are now free ofsnow. 現(xiàn)在大多數(shù)路都已沒有積雪了。

The city is free of [from]thieves. 這個城市沒有盜賊。

2. befree to do sth 可以自由地做某事。如:

You are free to go or to stay.要走要留悉聽尊便。

He is free to do what helikes. 他喜歡做什么都可以。

3. befree with sth (sb) 對某物(某人)隨便。如:

Mr Smith is free with hismoney. 史密斯先生花錢隨便。

Don’t be too free with yourparents. 對你父母的態(tài)度不能太隨便。

 

friend

1. befriends with sb 與某人友好。如:

Mary is friends with Bill.瑪麗與比爾要好。

He is great friends with theboss. 他與老板很要好。

2. keepfriends (with sb) (與某人)保持友好關(guān)系。如:

I think we should keep friends (withher). 我想我們應(yīng)該(與她)保持友好關(guān)系。

3. makefriends (with sb) (與某人)交朋友。如:

He makes friends easily.他很容易與人交上朋友。

He’s made friends with her.他已跟她交上朋友了。

The boy has made friends with thedog. 小男孩已與狗建立了感情。

 

friendly

1. befriendly to [towards] to sb 對某人友好。如:

He is very friendly to [towards]me. 他對我很好。

He is not very friendly to [towards]newcomers. 他對新來的人不太友好。

2. befriendly with sb 與某人要好。如:

Bill is friendly with thegirl. 比爾與這個女孩很要好。

The children here are quite friendlywith one another. 這里的孩子彼此很友愛。

3. Its friendly of sb (to do sth) 某人(做某事)很友好。如:

It’s very friendly of you.你真好。

It wasn’t very friendly of you toslam the door in his face. 你沖著他摔門太傷和氣了。

 

frighten

1. befrightened of (doing) sth 害怕()事。如:

Some people are frightened ofthunder, others of snakes. 有些人怕打雷,有些人怕蛇。

He was frightened of losingpower. 他害怕失去權(quán)力。

2. befrightened to do sth 害怕做某事。如:

She was frightened to look down fromthe top of the tall building. 她害怕從高樓項上朝下看。

3. frighten sb into (out of) doing sth 嚇唬某人做(不做)某事。如:

He frightened the old lady into(outof) signing the paper. 他嚇唬老太太,讓她在文件上簽字(不簽字)。

 

from

1. from ……on ……起。如:

From now on I will study hard.從現(xiàn)在起我要努力學(xué)習(xí)了。

From then on he knew he wouldwin. 從那時起他就知道他會贏。

He never spoke to her again from thatday on. 從那天以后他再沒有同她說過話。

2. from…to… …………。如:

I work from Monday to Friday.我從星期一到星期五上班。

He flew from Beijing toShanghai. 他坐飛機(jī)從北京到上海。

We lived in Paris from 1970 to 1978. 我們自19701978年住在巴黎。

比較以下結(jié)構(gòu)(注意名詞前不用冠詞)

from house to house挨家挨戶

from hand to hand 從一人之手到他人之手

from time to time 不時地

from shop to shop 逐店

1. atthe front (of)

(1) (……)前部(前面)。如:

This dress fastens at thefront. 這件衣服在前面扣鈕扣。

The engine at the front of thecar. 發(fā)動機(jī)在汽車前部。

(2) ……的前面。如:

He planted some trees at the front ofthe house. 他在房子前面種了些樹。

2. infront of ……前面(通常指范圍之外)。如:

There is a tall tree in front of theclassroom. 教室前面有棵大樹。

The bus stops right in front of ourhouse. 公共汽車正停在我們房前。

3. inthe front of ……的前部或前面(通常指范圍之內(nèi))。如:

The introduction is always in thefront of the book. 書的前言總是在書的前面。

The teacher’s desk is in the front ofthe classroom. 老師的講桌在教室前面。

 

full

1. befull of 充滿,裝滿,豐富,老想著。如:

The bus was full of students.公共汽車載滿了學(xué)生。

Her eyes are full of tears.她眼淚汪汪。

Thecrops are full of promise.莊稼豐收在望。

The lake is full of fish.這湖里魚很多。

He was full of the news.他老想著那消息。

2. tothe full 充分地。如:

He enjoyed life to the full.他盡情享受人生。

He should be punished to thefull. 必須狠狠懲罰他。

 

fun

1. forfun 為了高興,為了好玩。如:

He’s learning French for fun.他學(xué)習(xí)法語是為了好玩。

2. infun 不是當(dāng)真的,鬧著玩的,開玩笑地。如:

I’m not saying it in fun.我說這話不是開玩笑的。

3. have(there is) fun (in) doing sth 做某事很開心。如:

We had fun riding our bicycles to thebeach today. 我們今天騎自行車去海濱玩得很開心。

There’s no fun in spending theevening doing nothing. 晚上無事可干,很無聊。

4. makefun of sb 拿某人開玩笑,取笑某人。如:

People made fun of her because shewore such strange clothes. 人們?nèi)⌒λ┠菢悠婀值囊路?/span>

 

future

1. forthe future 為將來。如

Have you provided for thefuture? 你為將來作準(zhǔn)備沒有?

注:有時可表示以后、將來,但這種用法在現(xiàn)代英語中已很少見。

2. infuture今后,從今以后。如:

There is no excuse in future.下不為例。

In future, be more careful with yourmoney. 今后花錢要更加注意。

3. inthe future 將來,未來。如:

In the future we may all work fewerhours a day. 在將來我們的工作時間會縮短。

Who can tell what will happen in thefuture? 誰知道將來會發(fā)生什么事?

比較 in future in the future:前者多用于提警告、建議、要求、打算等;而后者多指純粹的將來,其含義較廣。但在現(xiàn)代英語中,兩者常可不加區(qū)別地混用。

4. inthe distant future 在遙遠(yuǎn)的將來。如:

In the distant future people may liveon the moon. 在遙遠(yuǎn)的將來人們可能會生活在月球上。

5. inthe near future 在不久的將來。如:

We’re hoping to move to Spain in thenear future. 我們希望不久能搬到西班牙去。

1. begathered聚集。如:

Thousands of welcomers were gatheredat the airport. 數(shù)千歡迎者聚集在機(jī)場。

2. gather around 聚集,召集,集合。如:

Gather around and I’ll tell you goodnews. 大家都過來,我告訴你們一個好消息。

3. gather around sb (sth) 聚集在某人(某事物)的周圍。如:

A crowd soon gathered aroundhim. 不一會兒就有一群人圍在他周圍。

The children gathered around thefire. 孩子們圍火而坐。

4. gather in 收進(jìn),收獲。如:

The harvest has been safely gatheredin. 莊稼已妥善收獲完畢。

5. gather sb sth / gather sth for sb 為某人收集或采集某物。如:

He gathered me some flowers. / Hegathered some flowers for me. 他給我采了幾朵花。

6. gather sb (sth) around sb (sth)把某人(某物)聚集在某人(某事物)周圍。如:

He soon gathered some young peoplearound him. 他很快就叫了一些年輕人圍在他旁邊。

7. gather to do sth 聚集在一起做某事。如:

A crowd gathered to see what hadhappened. 一群人聚集在一起看到底發(fā)生了什么事。

8. gather together

(1) 集在一起,圍攏來。如:

People gathered together to listen tothe broadcast programme. 人們圍攏來收聽廣播節(jié)目。

Gather the men together and we’llstart the march. 把人找攏來,我們就要出發(fā)了。

(2) 收拾,整理。如:

They gathered their belongingstogether and set off. 他們收拾好東西就出發(fā)了。

Give a moment to gather my notestogether. 給我些時間整理一下筆記。

9. gather up

(1) 收集,拾起,撿起,收拾。如:

He gathered up the child in hisarms. 他把孩子抱起來。

Gather your toys up.把你的玩具收拾起來。

(2) 集中,概括。如:

This title best gathers up thesubject. 這個標(biāo)題把這個問題很好地概括了起來。

 

general

in general

(1) 一般說來,總的說來,大體上,通常。如:

In general the plan is good.總的說來,這個計劃是好的。

He was in general quite glad togo. 總的說來, 他還是很樂意去。

(2) 大多數(shù),多半(放在名詞之后)。如:

Children in general are fond ofcandy. 小孩子多半都喜歡吃糖。

People in general don’t do thingslike that. 人們多半不會那樣做。

注:也可說成 as a general rule。
