There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people's eyes.
The barber pole's colors are a legacy of a long-gone era when people went to barbers not just for a haircut or shave but also for bloodletting and other medical procedures.
During the Middle Ages bloodletting, which involves cutting open a vein and allowing blood to drain, was a common treatment for a wide range of maladies, from sore throat to plague.
Monks, who often cared for the sick, performed the procedure, and barbers, given their skill with sharp instruments, sometimes provided assistance.
After Pope Alexander III in 1163 prohibited clergymen from carrying out the procedure, barbers added bloodletting — something physicians of the day considered necessary but too menialto do themselves — to their repertoires.
Known as barber-surgeons, they also took on such tasks as pulling teeth, setting bones and treating wounds.
To advertise their services and to remind people of their routine bloodletting, barbers left bowls of customer’s blood out their shop windows.
But in 1307 in London this form of advertising was banned, this made barbers, surgeons think of a new way to advertise their services.
During the bloodletting process, the patients would squeeze a pole so that their veins would be more exposed making it easier to cut them with a special tool call a fleam.
This pole sometimes had a brass ball at the top to hold leech and a basin was held underneath to collect the blood.
And then bandages were wapped around the pole after use, after the barber surgeon was finished with the patients, this pole along with the washed bandages tied to it was hung outside the shop to advertise his businiss.
Soon barbers were placing a replica of the pole painted in white and red stripes outside their shop instead of the real thing which has evolved into what we see today.
Red representing blood and white representing the bandages used to stem the bleeding.
In Europe, barber poles traditionally are red and white, while in America, the poles are red, white and blue.
One theory holds that blue is symbolic of the veins cut during bloodletting, while another interpretation suggests blue was addedto the pole as a show of patriotism and a nod to the nation's flag.
?/span>
I have an appointment at 8 this morning. My name is…
I'd like to have my hair cut.
Just a trim.
Leave some bangs, please.
Please dye my hair brown/dark/pink.
I’d like to have my hairs in big waves.
I want to try a straight perm.
I brought a magazine to show you. I like this one.
I'm ready for a new hairdo. Do you have any suggestions?
Can you show me some new hair styles?
