Nevertheless,as people become more affluent and divorce rates rise, an increasingnumber of couples are signing prenuptial agreements on division ofproperty in case of divorce.

"Iknow nobody wants to talk about divorce before marriage -- it soundsridiculous. It`s like talking about a funeral at a newborn`s birthday.But practically speaking, a prenuptial agreement does save a lot of time and disputes in court," Shanghai divorce lawyer Mike Liang said.

Prenuptialagreements, not unusual in the West, are legal contracts signed beforetwo people enter civil union, and include details of property division.For many years these legal instruments were considered peculiar by manyChinese. They were considered proof of how cold-blooded and calculatingrich people can be - so shrewd they must even consider the possibility of divorce before marriage.
在西方國(guó)家，婚前協(xié)議十分普遍，雙方在結(jié)婚登記前簽下這份合法的契約，其中涵蓋財(cái)產(chǎn)分割的方方面面。但多年來(lái)，許多中國(guó)人對(duì)這種法律文書(shū)嗤之以鼻，認(rèn)為這些充分證明了富人的精于算計(jì)和冷酷無(wú)情——過(guò)于精明以至于會(huì)在婚前就已考慮到離婚的可能性。
But along with hecticeconomic development, a large group of ordinary Chinese now own someproperty - apartments, vehicles, gold, jewelry, stocks, art, antiquesand other assets. Now there is property to divide in a settlement, andquite a bit can be acquired before marriage.
但隨著經(jīng)濟(jì)的迅猛發(fā)展，相當(dāng)多的中國(guó)老百姓手里都擁有一些財(cái)產(chǎn)——房子、車(chē)子、黃金、珠寶、股票、藝術(shù)品、古董和其他資產(chǎn)。目前大多夫妻會(huì)在處理糾紛時(shí)才會(huì)選擇財(cái)產(chǎn)劃分，很少有新人能在婚前便劃分財(cái)產(chǎn)的。
"Ihave been getting a lot of inquiries from couples who are about to getmarried, from young to old, about half and half, and increasingly morein the past three years," lawyer Liang said.

He adds that many people come to him as individuals, asking whether they can conduct the required ownership verification of prenuptial property by themselves alone - without telling the future spouse.
他補(bǔ)充說(shuō)，很多人都瞞著自己的另一半，單獨(dú)前來(lái)詢問(wèn)是否能辦理婚前財(cái)產(chǎn)的個(gè)人所有權(quán)認(rèn)證。
Someare relieved to find out that ownership of their apartment, car andother things purchased before marriage does not have to be verified,Liang said. By law, which many don`t know, they are not and will not beconsidered community property and won`t change hands in a divorce,without consent.
梁律師解釋說(shuō)，一些人在取得房子、汽車(chē)及其他婚前采購(gòu)物品所有權(quán)后大松了一口氣，其實(shí)本沒(méi)有這個(gè)必要。很多人不知道，依據(jù)法律，未經(jīng)當(dāng)事人允許，這些資產(chǎn)無(wú)論是在現(xiàn)在還是將來(lái)，都不會(huì)成為共同財(cái)產(chǎn)，也不會(huì)在離婚后轉(zhuǎn)手他人。
But many others worry that the materialism and pragmatismrepresented by a prenuptial accord may harm the necessary bedrock trustin a relationship, suggesting lack of faith and true love. Many who doconsider it decide never to raise the issue.
但也有許多人擔(dān)心這份既功利又現(xiàn)實(shí)的婚前財(cái)產(chǎn)協(xié)議，會(huì)破壞夫妻間所應(yīng)有的信任，顯示出戀人間信任與真愛(ài)的缺失。因此他們決不會(huì)選擇這樣做。
RebeccaLiu, a 27-year-old accountant, recently broke up with her 29-year-oldboyfriend Jerry Xu as they started discussing the possibility ofmarriage, after dating for a year and half.
Thereason was simple: Xu`s parents, who bought his apartment and car,insisted on a prenuptial property agreement so he would not lose theproperty in case of divorce. Xu obeyed his parents decision, saying,"It`s their money and I don`t have any grounds on which to argue withthem about this."
