Chinese actor Wang Baoqiang (王寶強) has published a surprise announcement on his Weibo account saying he will divorce his wife Ma Rong (蓉與) and accused Ma of cheating on him with his manager.

Very early Sunday morning, beloved Chinese actor Wang Baoqiang posted a heartfelt statement on Weibo saying that he was divorcing his wife, Ma Rong, for carrying out an affair with his agent that was destroying their family. Wang's post quickly became the hottest topic on the Chinese internet, generating millions of shares and comments. The vast majority of Weibo users have sided with Wang, calling Ma a 'whore,' 'prostitute' and 'gold digger.'

In the post, Wang, 32, said he had been in a loving, honest and faithful marriage with his wife Ma Rong, 30, since 2009.

“Now, due to Ma Rong’s extramarital sexual relations with my agent Song Zhe (宋喆), which has severely hurt the marriage and destroyed the family, I have solemnly decided to dissolve my marriage with Ma Rong and release Song Zhe from his position,” his statement read.
現(xiàn)因馬蓉與我經(jīng)紀人宋喆的婚外不正當兩性關(guān)系，嚴重傷害了婚姻、破壞了家庭，鄭重決定解除我與馬蓉的婚姻關(guān)系，同時解除宋喆的經(jīng)紀人職務(wù)。
Wang, who has a son and a daughter with Ma, concluded by asking the media to “give the family some privacy” and to be mindful of his two young children and their elderly grandparents.

Later, she made a cryptic post on her own Weibo account: 'Trying to hide it only makes it worse, the good and evil of it all will reveal itself in due time.' That post has amassed over 4 million comments.

Later on Sunday morning, Ma accused Wang of abandoning his family and friends on the social media app Wechat, and Ma said it's not the right time to say anything more. Ma also said on her Weibo that he who excuses himself accuses himself, and that good and evil will reveal themselves in the end.

Apparently, the time for revelations is growing nearer, because earlier today Ma sued Wang for defamation of character at a Beijing Chaoyang court. Ma says that she wants Wang to delete his original Weibo post and apologize to her.

Some people feel that this divorce seems to fit a certain trope - of a beautiful but ordinary girl marrying a rich but less good-looking man. It is not uncommon to hear the belief that a couple has to 'match' at every level - be it in status, or physical appearance - for a relationship to work out. 'However, there is also the convention for women to 'marry up' to more socioeconomically established men.'

'If we look at this story, it seems like an ordinary girl marrying up to a famous and rich husband, which to a large extent is true. But if we look more closely, the husband in this case comes from a rural family, he did not have much education and his physical appearance is not very attractive. So to the husband, the wife is like a realised dream for him,' Dr Mu says.

'People are getting much more open to the idea of divorce now, especially as Chinese people become more educated and open-minded towards both marriage and divorce,' says Dr Mu.
