Year of The Rooster
2017 is the year of the rooster, and it falls on the 28th of January.
中國人說的生肖叫 Chinese zodiac，生肖年（紅包口令：17萌享生肖）這么表達(dá)：the year of＋對應(yīng)的生肖，雞年就叫 the Year of the Rooster, 不是 chicken 哦！
In order, the 12 animals are:
Rat－鼠, Ox－牛, Tiger－虎, Rabbit－兔, Dragon－龍, Snake－蛇, Horse－馬, Goat－羊, Monkey－猴, Rooster－雞, Dog－狗, Pig－豬.
Each year is associated with a different zodiac animal. As the Chinese zodiac repeats itself every 12 years, your animal year will come around when you are 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, etc.

Spring Cleaning
每逢春節(jié)來臨，家家戶戶都要打掃衛(wèi)生，清洗各種器具，灑掃庭院，稱作為掃塵（紅包口令：17萌享掃塵），英文可以叫做 spring cleaning
Spring cleaning should be started 1 week prior to Chinese new year. The grounds, the walls, and every corner of the house need to be cleaned. 掃塵開始于臘月24，春節(jié)前一個星期。
來個短語:
prior to－在…..之前，和 before 是一個意思
The reason behind this is that we Chinese believe that by cleaning everything in the house, you’re getting rid of all the bad things that happened that year and getting ready for a new start.
其用意是要把一切窮運(yùn)、晦氣統(tǒng)統(tǒng)掃出門
Spring Festival Couplets
每逢春節(jié)，無論城市還是農(nóng)村，家家戶戶都要精選一幅大紅春聯(lián)（紅包口令：17萌享春聯(lián)）貼于門上，為節(jié)日增加喜慶氣氛。
With black or golden characters written on red paper, Spring Festival Couplets are composed of a pair of poetry lines vertically pasted on both sides of the front door.
Couplet 指兩行詩，押韻的對句
我們的春聯(lián)／對聯(lián)就叫 Spring Festival Couplets，春聯(lián)分上下兩聯(lián)，上聯(lián)叫 upper scroll, 下聯(lián)叫 lower scroll.
除了貼春聯(lián)之外，還要貼福字，the character “Fu”, meaning good fortune or happiness, is used to express people’s good wishes and yearning for the future, so people usually paste it on gates, above the front door or on some furniture in the house during the Chinese New Year.
為了更充分地體現(xiàn)這種向往和祝愿，有的人干脆將“福”字倒過來貼，表示“幸福已到”、“福氣已到”。
Family Reunion Dinner
除夕夜，合家團(tuán)圓的年夜飯又稱團(tuán)圓飯-family reunion dinner（紅包口令：17萌享團(tuán)圓），中國人很重視這頓表現(xiàn)出中華民族家庭成員的互敬互愛的年夜飯，都會準(zhǔn)備一大桌子美味佳肴，所以也叫 Chinese New Year’s Eve Feast

結(jié)婚擺的婚宴可以叫 wedding feast
年夜飯因為南北方的飲食差異，吃的當(dāng)然也就不一樣
In the northern part of China, people like to make dumplings which are usually shaped like a golden nugget－金元寶. It symbolizes fortune and good luck.
People from the southern part of China don’t eat dumplings, but prefer chicken and duck meat.
南方不會包餃子，會準(zhǔn)備一桌雞鴨魚肉， 當(dāng)然還少不了 glutinous rice cake－年糕，也可以叫 sticky rice cake, by eating this, it symbolizes that you’re going to have a great year.
Staying Up Late
吃完了年夜飯，還有守歲（紅包口令：17萌享守歲），守歲是中國明間在除夕的習(xí)俗，一家團(tuán)聚，熬夜迎接農(nóng)歷新年的到來
On Chinese New Year’s Eve, people tend to stay up past midnight. Family members chat around and watch New Year’s Gala while waiting for the arrival of the Lunar New Year.
New Year’s Gala－春節(jié)聯(lián)歡晚會
When midnight arrives, people set off firecrackers to scare away the monster that comes out during New Year’s Eve.
除了放鞭炮－firecrackers, 還有煙火－fireworks
set off 這個短語在這里是點燃，使爆炸的意思，還有動身，出發(fā)的意思，常用的就是set off for+地點名詞，表示動身去某地
