My second visit to the U.S.A.(9)— The world is so small
Yesterday afternoon I paid a visit to a Chinese family in the neighborhood where my son lived. I met the hostess of the family by chance while I was taking a walk around the neighborhood about two months before, then, who was holding her little daughter in the hand, standing in front of her house. I said hello to her when I walked past. We talked with each other only a few words. She told me that her parents would come to the US soon to help take care of her children. She would be pleased to be visited when her parents were with her family here. I haven't seen her ever since I met her last time.
Being busy with cooking meals, reading books, watching DVD, surfing on the internet these days, I could hardly remember to call at the Chinese house.
It occurred to me that I ought to call on the young woman’s parents whom I had known lately. We lived very near, I could see the back balcony of her home through the windowpane of my kitchen. I pressed the bell of her door and was invited into the living room. All the members of her family were at home. Because it was Presidents’ Day that day, some of the companies in the United States had a one-day holiday, her husband was off duty. I sat in the sofa chatting with the hostess, while her elder daughter watching animated cartoon on TV and her younger one sleeping. I was told that her parents would be here the next week. She was looking forward to seeing them soon.
After introducing ourselves to each other, I was amazed that the husband and wife were from Jinan City of Shandong Province in China. Unexpectedly, they came from the same city as I did. What a happy coincidence! We talked and talked, suddenly I felt close with her. It was more astonishing that her parents-in-law lived only one block away from the place where I used to work. My God, the world is so small!
Our conversation lasted two hours, then I said good-bye to her and went home.
